Your October 2019 Digital Marketing News Roundup

Can you believe October is over? There were several digital marketing changes, so make sure you catch up on all the news you may have missed!

Your October 2019 digital marketing news roundup

There’s no slowing down in the world of digital marketing!

October has brought updates to the way people can apply to jobs, how businesses can update their local search to fit user needs and the future of bots on Twitter. Keep reading to learn more!

McDonald’s Voice Command Job Applications

Last month, we told you about how McDonald's is growing its use of digital technology by equipping its drive-thrus with voice-activated ordering systems. This month they are taking the use of voice-activated technology to another level.

In an effort to encourage younger demographics to take on entry-level jobs, the company is starting to employ Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for help.

Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa will now be equipped for people to start their job applications for McDonald’s through these voice programs. Currently, these programs are set up to ask the person who is applying to respond to a few basic questions, and following their answers, they will be sent a link to complete the application process online.

This change is just another way in which digital technology is breaking into the workspace.

Google Maps Helps Visually-Impaired Users

Now available in the U.S. and Japan is Google Maps’ new voice navigation for visually-impaired users to follow when they are walking to destinations.

This feature will provide continuous reminders that the user is following the correct path or that their next turn is coming up, warnings when there is a busy crosswalk ahead and automatic navigation toward the correct direction when the user needs to stop.

As Google Maps is preparing to grow this program outside of just the U.S. and Japan, make sure your business fits the capabilities that this new navigation feature offers. You want to make your business accessible to everyone, so stay updated as to how to make sure your business is available for customers who will use this feature!

Twitter’s Combatting Bots

Social Media Today recently reported, following an interview with Twitter’s Legal, Trust, Policy, and Safety Lead, that the creation of bot account identification is a possibility on the platform in the future.

Although this has not been verified but instead just discussed, it could still be a big step for the platform toward becoming a more reliable source for news and other information.

The possibility of this system is not unlikely. In fact, Facebook just released an update to its badge system, which will remove gray verification badges on business pages. These badges were typically used to identify businesses, but it was discovered that this system was being misused by users who created duplicate and false accounts for businesses.

If you are looking for more information on Facebook’s action against these illegitimate accounts, click here.

A system like this could be similar to the platform’s current verification checkmark, which identifies users with big followings.

With this bot identification, users will have a quick and clear idea of what an account is, who’s behind it and an awareness of the content that could come from it.
